    Picosecond Laser

    /PIK-oh-SEK-und/

    Definition

A laser that delivers energy in pulses measured in trillionths of a second (picoseconds). Shatters pigment into smaller particles than older nanosecond lasers.

A picosecond laser emits energy pulses that last one trillionth of a second — 1,000 times shorter than the nanosecond pulses used in older Q-switched lasers. This ultra-short pulse duration creates a photomechanical effect rather than a photothermal (heat-based) effect, meaning it shatters pigment particles through acoustic shockwaves rather than burning them.

    Why Picosecond Matters

    • Smaller particle fragments: The body clears smaller particles faster, meaning fewer sessions needed
    • Less heat damage: Reduced risk of scarring, burns, and hyperpigmentation — especially important for darker skin tones
    • Multi-color capability: Effective on all ink colors, including stubborn greens and blues that nanosecond lasers struggle with
    • Versatility: Same technology treats tattoo removal at high energy and skin toning/pigmentation at lower energy
ℹ️ Good to KnowThe PiQo4 at SKIN Las Vegas operates in both picosecond and nanosecond modes, allowing our team to select the optimal pulse duration based on your specific ink colors, depth, and skin type.
