    Retinol

    /RET-ih-nahl/

    Definition

A vitamin A derivative that speeds up skin cell turnover and stimulates collagen production — among the most clinically proven ingredients for fine lines, acne, and uneven skin tone.

Retinol is the over-the-counter member of the retinoid family — vitamin A derivatives that bind to skin cell receptors and tell them to behave younger: turn over faster, produce more collagen, and shed pigment more evenly. Prescription tretinoin is the strongest form; retinol is the gentler, slower-acting OTC version.

    What to Expect

    • Start low (0.25%) and use 2–3 nights per week, building up
    • Mild flaking, redness, and dryness ('retinization') for the first 2–4 weeks is normal
    • Always pair with daily SPF — retinol makes skin more sun-sensitive
    • Pause 5–7 days before peels, laser, or microneedling
